Frequently Asked Questions

A Tutor provides short-term, targeted academic support. Their primary role is to reteach content, help students with homework, test preparation, or editing papers, and address immediate learning gaps in specific subjects like math, reading, or writing.

An Academic Mentor not only supports subject-specific learning but also guides a student’s overall academic development. This includes building study habits, learning skills, and growth mindsets. Academic mentors act as consistent, trusted guides who help students understand how to learn more effectively and make thoughtful academic choices.

Most families begin seeing positive changes within the first few months, including:

1. Improved grades and academic engagement;

2. Stronger routines and fewer missing assignments;

3. Greater confidence, focus, and emotional regulation;

4. More independent, curious learners at home;

Results vary based on parent involvement and student commitment, but our approach is research-based and outcome-driven....so progress is measurable.

A Mentor will show up to sessions with their own material and resources, but students are encouraged to be prepared with pencils, paper, homework, class work, etc.).

If the parent or student would like to work on anything specific, it’s best to text or email their coach ahead so they can be prepared. Ascend Education uses school-specific curricula when useful, applicable, and available while also tailoring sessions according to our own unique approach.

We offer both online and in-person sessions to fit your family’s needs. Each session is 1-to-1, fully personalized, and goal-oriented. Most sessions are one hour long, but we're happy to adjust the length—just let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

For online sessions: We use secure video platforms for engaging, face-to-face coaching.

For in-person sessions (available in select areas): coaches can meet at home, school, or local library.

We collaborate closely with parents to create a schedule and format that works best for the student.

Yes, absolutely. Many of our students face challenges such as ADHD, dyslexia, executive functioning difficulties, and other learning challenges. Though our coaches do not have special education backgrounds, they are trained to tailor educational support to each child’s unique learning profile. We focus not only on academic gaps but also on helping students build the self-awareness, strategies, and confidence they need to succeed—on their terms.

We know that life is unpredictable and sometimes we need to change our plans. Because sessions are prepaid, you can cancel sessions at any time without a fee (unless a session is cancelled within 1 hour of starting, then the session will count as services rendered).
